Made a rec list of One Piece fics for my own convenience, though I'm afraid there's still plenty of good fics not on it. More on this behind the cut.

If you see anything off about this - if I fouled up a link, or you think the summary doesn't fit the fic (esp. if you wrote the fic), please let me know! Note: This will be continually updated.

Under A Different Moon by [personal profile] naye is an AU of an AU! To quote from the author's notes: "It is a what-if in a what-if - the Une!verse is asking what it would be like if Portgas D. Rouge had had a daughter instead of a son. And here the question was - what if Kuina, not Zoro, was the one to set out in the world, carrying both their legacy?

And what if they met?"

Well, then you get this intriguing fic, drinking sake on a night in East Blue on a floating restaurant...

I just wish there could be more of this continuity!

Today's fic rec is another fairy tale pastiche/parody, The Travels of Lucky Luffy by [personal profile] hibem. Cracky and wonderful - I actually think all the characters work excellently in their assigned parts, no matter how crazy it gets.

To quote the writer, this is "Worksafe, if somewhat riddled with innuendo".

“Stop!” it said, “Don’t eat me! Let me out of this snare, for I am a fearsome warlock with eight thousand demons at my command, and I could curse you for the rest of your days!”

“Oh-ho-ho!” Luffy laughed, “You surprised me!” But he let the woodpecker go, because talking woodpeckers are too cool to eat.

Interests and Intentions by thermopylae is set post-Enies Lobby and features a Franky who's not sure of how to talk to Robin. This wasn't just the first fic with the pairing I read, but also the first fic I read from Franky's POV: it convinced me that I might be able to write Franky too one day. I'd rate it G: it's not a steamy shipfic and doesn't try to be, but it's appealing, IC and charming.

This is a long one! 20 chapters and over 150,000 words, Asteria Nightmare by Velkyn Karma is a thrilling action/mystery where the Strawhats go to a forbidden island, only to find they may have bit off more than they can chew. Even to find out who the enemy is and what's happened on the island is a daunting task, never mind figuring out how to win or even survive. A plotheavy genfic that's all told through Nami's POV but which still manages to give all crew members their time to shine - and to keep up the suspense throughout the adventure.

Set post-Thriller Bark and before Sabaody. Rated "T for some language and general...dark creepiness", to quote the author.

Whoa, totally forgot about making a fic rec last night! (It's morning over here.) It's not like I wasn't on the internet, too. Well, I'll just make one now and one regular tonight. *^_^*

Here's one I read only the other day and really liked in a melancholy way: grey thinking by irrelevant, a what-if AU where Rouge survives. Here, Ace is 9 years old and lives in Fuusha village. Though there is an unavoidable sadness in the tone since we know it's contrafactual, it still feels heartwarming - and just plain interesting to see what's been going on. Well-written, much recommended.

Today's fic rec is a popular story, deservedly so, for a popular pairing: Like Steel For Chocolate by [profile] maldoror_gw. It's got a prologue, four main chapters and an epilogue; it goes up to light R in rating and takes place after Enies Lobby and before Thriller Bark. Sanji/Zoro is the main pairing - it's all from Sanji's POV - but Luffy/Usopp is a secondary pairing and then there's a third pairing the writer prefers to keep a surprise.

I'll quote from the summary: "Sanji's cooking has reached a whole new level. It's almost uncanny. Especially when his thoughts and emotions somehow get into the mix along with the rest of the ingredients."

This was actually the first fic that made me see the appeal of Sanji and Zoro as a couple. It's never been a pairing I dislike, but I'm also not passionate about it - in general. There are still fics and art with them I adore, and this was the first. Very well-written and IC the whole way through - and it helps that the rest of the crew doesn't get forgotten.

Largely for my own convenience, I've made a big list of fic recs for One Piece. You can find it here if you're curious: feedback is of course very much welcome.

The manga Twin Spica is now complete in English with 12 volumes in total - I just finished the last one today. It came perfectly as I'd just done a big re-read of all the previous volumes.

This is a slow-paced, slice-of-lifey story about a teenaged girl who's wanted to be an astronaut for as long as she can remember (there are many flashbacks to hers and her friends' childhoods). It is also about the tight-knit group of five friends she makes in space school who share that dream. But the main character's best friend since childhood and the second most prominent character is actually a ghost who normally only she can see. He wears a lion mask (she calls him "Mr Lion";)) and has always encouraged her because he once strived to go to space as well.

I forget the demographic category for this manga, but it does have many of the typical shonen themes and tropes: striving for your dreams with all your might, staying true to yourself, the strong value of friendship and working together, etc. And admittedly it can be repetitive at times, telegraphing certain things pretty loudly... BUT I also found it a genuinely affective series, mostly feelgood, with some genuine hardhitting curveballs along the way.

It has hints of romance here and there, but it doesn't take up a big part of the story. Which might be good given that the main character is sooo small and child-like-looking... but anyway. I'm just overcome with emotions at the end of this series, and now I just want to recommend it to one and all. Lovely stuff.

On a happier note, Bride's Story (Otoyemegatari) by Kaori Mori is every bit as gorgeous and intriguing as people have said it was, maybe even more. And so beautifully presented by Yen Press! It's been a while since I had that greedy/content feeling of MINE MINE IT'S ALL MIIINE right after buying a new manga volume.

And I just got the French translation of Saint Young Men/Saint Oniichan in the mail! Titled Les vacandes de Jésus et Bouddha, straightforwardly enough. ;)

Maybe my fellow One Piece fans remember me posting about the Manga Moveable Feast back in December. Well, it turns out that one of the bloggers I was the most impressed by, ABCDTom (currently here but apparently making plans to move somewhere else) has gone on to write more about One Piece - in fact, it's pretty much the main focus of most of his blog entries. He writes about Sabãody and Marineford; and also about how many now-ardent One Piece fans had misgivings about the series to begin with (see here).

Sample quotes:
Oda normally hides the darkness at the corner of your eyes, such as Kokoro’s descent into alcoholism. It’s there if you look for it, but he doesn’t tell you to look for it. So when the darkness comes out in full force, as in the Marineford Summit War arc, it catches people off guard.(...)

and:
Usopp’s insecurities could possibly stem from the fact he was abandoned by his father and unable to save his mother who died of a wasting illness when he was still a child. ...However, this is never clearly spelled out and belabored in long monologues where Usopp bemoans the fact that his childhood was destroyed by an uncaring father.

OH AND WHILE I'M AT IT. Manga blogger Rob McMonigal is going to look at Rumiko Takahashi's work very thoroughly - in fact, he intends to do so the whole year! He's currently re-reading the Ranma 1/2 manga, and is up to volume 7 so far. All posts can be found here.

Sample quote: What's interesting to me about all this, however, is that the entire cast, from main characters like Ranma to bit players, such as a contest announcer or the other students at the high school, take each and every bit of ridiculousness in stride. Normally in a comedy, someone is the person on the outside. They look at what's happening and cannot believe that a bride would run away or that your future father in law is a CIA agent who gets into silly situations or that there's a law firm that looks like most of its lawyers came from an institution. Ranma 1/2 doesn't have that.

I am also perennially reccing manga bloggers David Welsh (now at a new site), Connie and Sean Gaffney.)

Repost time, again!

Back in February there was a poster on [community profile] one_piece asking for fic recs of Usoppian Water 7 angst, no pairing preferences as long as there was something about the Luffy-Usopp conflict in it. I was one of the commenters who replied. Since I've very much been there, I made a pretty big list, hunting down old and new favourites both.

The other day I thought maybe I could memory that post for my own convenience, but then [personal profile] shayera wrote a new great ficlet on [profile] onepiece_300 fitting the subject, and most likely there'll be more in the future. I can't edit comments, and I don't know if the OP want any more replies this late. So it hit me that I could repost the whole thing - including recs made by others in the thread - on my own LJ instead, making it easy for me to add new links in the future.

And while I realise it's quite gauche to rec your own stuff, I've nevertheless linked to some fics of mine on the subject at the very end. I make no promise with regards to quality, though.
